Building the Foundation for Project Success with the Statement of Work
Studies show that organizations are losing billions of dollars annually on failed or mismanaged projects. One of the most common reasons cited for project failure is the poor quality, or complete absence, of a detailed Statement of Work (SOW). This course which is based on Mike’s book Delivering Project Excellence with the Statement of Work, 2nd Edition, provides an insightful analysis of how the SOW can be used to mitigate against project failure and, in turn, improve the probability of success and return on investment of your projects. The discussion will address the process for developing a high quality SOW, its role as a contractual supporting document, and how it’s used as a baseline for measuring, managing, and auditing project change and performance. The agenda for this course is as follows:
Introduction
Part 1: Understanding the Fundamentals of the SOW
Part 2: Building the SOW
Part 3: Maintaining the SOW for Project Excellence
Part 4: Changing the Paradigm

Introduction to Enterprise Risk Management
In December 2009, the Securities and Exchange Commission issued new proxy disclosure rules that requires U.S. publically traded companies to include information about the Board’s involvement in risk oversight in their annual proxy statements.1 One approach that companies are using to meet this requirement is by implementing enterprise risk management (ERM). The concept takes a “proactive” approach to addressing risk, rather than the old traditional “reactive” approach. The Introduction to Enterprise Risk Management course introduces participants to the basic concepts, processes, and methodologies of implementing and using ERM to better manage their businesses. The course is structured and follows a six phase methodology for implementing and applying ERM within an organization. Within each of these phases, participants will be exposed to the policies & procedures, tools & techniques, governance, change enablement, and training associated with ERM.
Introduction
Lesson 1: ERM Concepts, Terminology and Policy
Lesson 2: Governance
Lesson 3: Strategy Phase
Lesson 4: Risk Identification Phase
Lesson 5: Risk Assessment Phase
Lesson 6: Evaluation & Analysis Phase
Lesson 7: Selection & Prioritization Phase
Lesson 8: Implementation & Monitoring Phase
Lesson 9: Tools and Techniques
Lesson 10: Change Enablement Process
Lesson 11: Research and References
