Project Audits
Projects can get off track and in trouble very quickly without proper project management
oversight. When this happens, projects can experience cost overruns, schedule delays,
mismanaged scope changes, quality issues, and team member dissatisfaction – just to name a
few. Organizations often do not realize that a project is in trouble until it is too late. As such,
they take a reactive approach and wait until something bad happens and then conduct a post
mortem on what caused the negative event to occur. One way to help insure that your project
does not get into trouble is to be proactive and conduct project audits throughout the life cycle
of a project.
A project audit is defined as “An independent, unbiased structured assessment
of an organizations project management methods and policies in managing the cost, schedule,
resources, scope, and quality of a project, program, or portfolio of projects.” Conducting a
project audit will help expose any problems that may have occurred or are about to occur and, in
turn, will provide you with an opportunity to take corrective action and get the issue fixed before
it negatively impacts the project.
